Faith or Belief?
These days when I hear someone ask if you "believe" in this or that - I think to myself - "How quaint." What a quaint idea it is to think that believing in a certain idea or deity or doctrine or person is all you have to do. How utterly simplistic a spiritual practice this is.
Faith isn't what doctrine you believe in. Faith is living life from your spiritual knowing, meeting the challenges of your every day world with spirit filled eyes, a spirit filled heart, and a spirit filled willingness to be the best you can be. Faith is an active walk through life. Faith is a powerful commitment to trust Sprit/God/the Divine, whatever you call it and know it to be, in every area of your life. Faith is going out on a limb to love the "unlovable", forgive the "unforgiveable" and trust rather than to be afraid. This walk is not for the faint-hearted or those who don't' want to change the status quo. This is a radical walk of deep self-awareness, profound acceptance of others, and a willingness to be transformed by the Fire of the Holy Presence.
The next time someone asks you what or if you believe in something - ask them instead "How do you practice living your faith?"

There was an article by Leonard Pitts today about the bible verses being etched onto the army rifle scopes. He brings out some of the reasons that I could no longer remain within a Christian context and which presaged my move into SOM. It was an interesting restatement of the issue of "what does your Faith do to your life practice?"
