Finding our Soul
Soul food, Soul music, Got Soul? Soul isn't exclusive to the hip or black or young. Soul is the alive, earthy, passionate, connected side of each one of us. Within each of us there an unbounded mystery, an inner eternity whose depths we spend our whole life trying to cover, recover or uncover. It is here, within, that our insides are bigger than our outsides, because it's here that we turn into the Whole, the One - the infinite, vast, essential reality that lives and breathes and has its very being as us and through all creation.
"Culture is the soul of a people" Gail Thomas writes in her new book, Healing Pandora. Civilization is what we've got now, because we have become disconnected - disconnected from the earth, from each other and from Spirit. But there is a whole movement afoot, planet-wide, to re-engage with the Mystery. We have learned that certainty and security are lies when these rely on the senses and abilities of the merely human. So souls are being re-born in the midst of chaos in a true connection to the mystery of life. We are learning to live day by day with gratitude and humility.
Touching the almighty mystery is guaranteed to humble us. We can not control all these forces that have been unleashed. But we can control our own minds, our own fears, and our own behaviors. We can stop seeking outer security and seek refuge in the Spiritual Truth of the deep and abiding connection and wholeness of Life. We can stop needing external validation for our value and worth, and connect to what is meaningful and fulfilling in life. We can stop looking for someone else to fix it, and intuit a possibility from the great inner stillness within. We can stop waiting for someone else to do something, and be the change we wish to see in the world!
Thus we become en-souled. We open to the soul of ourselves - the depth and richness of our own being. We make peace with the mystery of the unknown, both inside and out, and we come to realize that it really is all about the way we walk the path, not which path we are on or even where we are going. There is nothing to fear - we live in eternity. There is nothing to keep safe, for we already have it all. There is nothing to fix - it's all Being becoming through the dance called creation. If culture is the soul of a people, this is the soul of a person. Being becoming. The dance of creation. The mystery that we can rely on the mystery itself. Got Soul?
