Celebrating Labor as Creative Expression...
As we celebrate Labor Day today, with our family and friends, Bar-B-Qs and pool parties, it's wonderful to stop a moment and be grateful for the fact that our work is part of the creative process in the Universe. The Universe is fundamentally creative. It is always seeking to express itself through its creation. That means through each one of us. One of the ways that we participate in co-creating our world, and in expressing ourselves, is through our work.
Labor has often come to mean something hard, even something that is a struggle. Yet when we celebrate Labor Day, we are not celebrating the struggle of work, but rather the dignity, power, and satisfaction that comes when we work at something that adds value to our life and the lives of others. We have come, in this country, to glorify making money. Yet true labor makes money as a side product of actually making something or contributing something meaningful to Life. In this way, our work is part of the creative process of the Universe itself. The Universe works in the world, by working through our hands, and our jobs, and whatever it is that we contribute.
Today, look for all the ways that you are actively contributing to life, to your family, to your community, and to the word, through the work that you do. Celebrate every bit of self-expression and creativity that you are able to express. Perhaps, if you have nothing to celebrate but a pay-check, be grateful for that fact, while you consider whether working for a pay-check is actually enough. And if you currently do not have a pay-check, celebrate the fact the since the Universe is inherently creative, and work is part of self-expression, the Universe completely and actively supports you in having meaningful, fulfilling and prosperous work.
In addition to celebrating our own work, let's take a moment to stop and celebrate the unprecedented prosperity that people are experiencing all over the world. Despite the wars and recession and poverty, despite the environmental and energy challenges we face, even despite the widening gap between rich and poor, the global population is generally better off at this point in history than ever before. All of the labor that has come before us, has allowed unprecedented leisure time, significant drops in maternal and infant mortality rates, and both the hope and the reality of increased prosperity all over the globe. Let us not only celebrate these facts, but let us join together to continue to work toward greater global sustainability in terms of work, energy, equality, water and food, that all of our labor may truly be a labor of love and a giving of our unique gifts to participate in co-creating a world that truly works for everyone.
