Living our spirituality….

It can be quite the challenge to live our spirituality rather than simply talk about it. It is so enlightening to discuss metaphysics, explore esoteric ideas, and learn about spiritual principles. We read books, watch movies, go to seminars, and meet with coaches, all in the hopes of finding a new answer or idea which will change our lives.

My experience is that transformation comes slowly and stealthily, like the fog that quietly steals over the valley floor as the day cools to evening. In the light of day there is much commotion, birds chirping and flitting, cars rushing, phones ringing, and to do lists to be completed. Spiritual practice can seem like something we do and then check off our list. Metaphysical principles become another way we work at being effective in the world and seek to succeed or create or become what we have chosen.

There is a deepening, however, that is quieter - an inner being, a stillness, the calls us to our own souls. This is our longing to belong. This is a yearning for communion, a hunger for depth and beauty and meaning. This is our understanding that there is more to life than simply doing our spiritual practice. We must embody, embrace, and become our soul's outlet for life and for love. Thus we are asked to surrender working at our spirituality. We are invited to stop talking about spiritual principles. We are admonished to stop seeking the answers outside. And we are drawn to the richness and the power of Presence.

Be Present in the Presence. We say we teach positive thinking, spiritual intention, and trust in the process. Are we living it? Are we easily irritated, often annoyed, feeling discounted, trivialized, or put out by the events and people around us? How much judgment do we still exude? How much do we still need to control and manage and make happen? Where is our peace? Where is our joy?

Living our spirituality is bringing the Presence into every present moment. It is slowing down enough to pay attention - pay attention to what is really happening and to the deep, rich, profound possibility that every moment offers.

Ernest Holmes says we indulge in too much theory and too little practice. Practice comes in the day in and day out, on-going commitment to being the Light, no matter what. Thus every day begins to become a peaceful, cool, and restful walk, like an evening stroll at twilight. Embracing the image helps us embrace the intention which helps us become the reality. Let us walk in the refreshing cool, allowing the misty Presence to enfold us, while the stars come out to mingle their light with ours. And slowly, inexorably, we will be transformed beyond our wildest imaging.
