Osama Bin Laden - Emotions and Spiritual...
Osama Bin Laden - Emotions and Spiritual Truth
Wow, I notice that I have a lot of mixed emotions reading about the killing of Osama Bin Laden. Let's see if I can even name them all - grateful he's been found and "taken care of"; horrified that we are celebrating a killing; proud of our service people and glad they are back safely; fearful of retaliation; wondering when will it end; patriotic toward our country; angry at the seemingly endless amount of twisting that can be done around any piece of political news; and a yearning for us to remember Unity and Oneness, Liberty and Justice.
Feeling all these emotions, I am reminded why it is so important for me to not simply begin speaking or acting out of my emotions, but rather, first to explore what is going on within me, and then to ask myself some important questions. Some of these questions are "What does my spiritual teaching tell me?" "What do I value in the midst of all this?" "What kind of a person do I want to be?" "What kind of behavior serves me, love, highest purpose and/or the greatest good?"
Every time I feel my emotions, I am called to be my highest and best self. It's not always easy, and I don't always do it. But the more often I can, the better I get at it.
So - What my spiritual teaching tells me is that peace and love are always the answer. What I value is justice and liberty. The kind of person I want to be is both strong and forgiving. The kind of behavior which serves me is to be for something and against nothing.
So today I choose to be the peace and love I seek to see in the world. I honor and respect the liberty of others and will seek justice for those that are harmed or discriminated against. I will stand strong in my faith, my love for all people, and forgive those who beget violence, without allowing that violence to continue. I will stand FOR Unity, Peace, Harmony, and the respect for all people, without standing against any one person or group. To the best of my ability I will have these ideals rule my speech and action while allowing my emotions to wash through me without running away with me.
Every day we have this opportunity, no matter how big or small something is that confronts us. Where will you stand in the midst of whatever you are feeling today?
